Laser Spine Institute of Tampa Malpractice
As of September 2017, Laser Spine Institute of Tampa has 27 recorded instances of malpractice according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Although some of the instances resulted in no payout to the Plaintiff, others resulted in significant payouts from thousands of dollars up to 5 million dollars. The high profile surgical center employs 13 surgeons and maintains locations in 6 states different states according to its website. However, the Laser Spine Institute has come under scrutiny as critics raise concerns that the highly profitable surgeries suggested by their doctors may not be medically necessary.
According to an article by Bloomberg Businessweek, Laser Spine Institute routinely charges patients $30,000 for its procedure. However, some insurance carriers such as Aetna won’t cover the operations at Laser Spine Institute citing a lack of research confirming safety and efficacy. Other insurance carriers have opted only to pay for certain procedures conducted at Laser Spine Institute. According to nine surgeons interviewed by Bloomberg Businessweek, the company is doing surgery that is often unnecessary or inappropriate.
In 2012, a patient of the Laser Spine Institute complained that after his spinal surgery he was left with bladder and bowel incontinence, lack of sensation in his groin (including his penis), and back pain that radiates into his groin and legs. He also complained of tremors, vertigo, and depression since the surgery. According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, his claim was settled for $5,000,000.
